The person to the left of the dealer begins the first round by playing the first card. The first card can be any card, including a Trump Change Card.The next player to the left then plays the next card, followed by the next player to the left in turn, until each player has played one card. The person with the highest number of the color/suit played, wins the first book/trick, keeps the cards in front of them face down & earns 1 point.

The Trump Change Card counts as a “13” of any color called as trump after it is played. The person who plays the Trump Change Card chooses the color of the Trump Change Card which also becomes the new trump color/suit in play. (If the Trump Change Card is played after the first card in the book/trick, refer to #6 in GAME PLAY for specific rules for the immediate book/trick only).

Trump Change Game – Rules-Jokers
At the players’ discretion, the jokers can replace 2 Trump Change Cards. The jokers are the best possible cards, similar to the concept of “low joker” and “high joker” in other games. Players can decide whether the donkey or elephant is the high joker. The high joker (worth 15) beats all other cards in the trick regardless of when it is played and even if another Trump Change card is played after it (overriding the general rule above).
